How to Stay Safe While Taking an Uber Ride?

Uber has made transportation easy for many people, especially students and young people around the world. Passengers are only required to download the app on their mobile device, connect with a driver nearby and get a ride to their desired location. However, with Uber’s growing popularity, there are many instances of passengers being assaulted and harassed by their drivers and of imposters posing as Uber drivers, trying to lure unsuspecting riders into a trap. All these incidents raise serious question on safety of passengers while taking an Uber ride.

Here are some basic ways passengers can stay safe while riding an Uber car:

Never get in the car with someone other than your assigned driver: Once a car is booked, the app provides you with information of your driver including the name, license plate number, and photo of the driver and the car. You should always use this information and make sure that the person picking you up is the Uber driver who accepted your request.

Let a friend or family know of your ride: If you are taking the ride alone, it is always wise to let a friend or family member know that you are using Uber. The app has a “share your ETA” feature that allows you to notify your loved ones of your whereabouts. A friend or family member who receives the link will be able to see your car moving along the distance, and they can see when you arrive.

Do not wait outside: When your driver arrives at your location, you will receive a message. You do not have to wait outside in a potentially unsafe area. You can be inside your house or a restaurant or anywhere safe.

Take a note of the driver’s rating before booking a ride: The app has a rating system that allows riders and drivers to rate each other. Take a note of the driver’s ratings. Avoid drivers whose ratings are low.
